This weekend my son had a growth spurt. Not the normal one where he grows a little at a time but one where he woke up in the morning and nothing fit. Not his underwear, pants or even his shoes. So my Sunday was spent running around with a four year and my 17 month old trying to buy a whole new wardrobe. We were doing OK until we hit the shoe shop.
The shoe shop is my traditional place of hell. I am not one of those women who lust after shoes. I hate them and more than hating shoes I hate shopping for them. As a kid my mother and I always had our most impressive fights in the shoe shop. I vividly recall her threatening me with a pair of high heeled shoes as she waved it above my head and not so calmly discussed my dating choices.
So we got to the shoe shop and B immediately went for the pink light up Hannah Montana shoes.
I want these mommy.
Sorry sweety I said calmly putting them back and looking at the boys shoes, We need to find shoes that you can wear to shoes. These brown ones are nice.
NOOOOO!!!!! I want the Hannah Montana shoes! I WANT EM! I DO MOMMYYYYY!!!!
But sweety...
Suddenly I was hit in the head by a pair of red pump.
Hannah Montana Mommy!!!!!
A pair of spiked boots came flying at my head.
My little S was armed and was lobbing shoes at my head as fast as a malfunctioning batting cage.
NOT THE BROWN ONES!!!!! I WANT PINK!!!!!!!!
I ducked as a pair of ballet flats connected with my head.
Not the brown mommy!!! NO!!!!! I WANT THE PINK LIGHT UP HANNA MONTANA SHOES! NOW!!!!!! WAAAA!!!!!!!!
I picked up my children one under each arm and ran up the stairs to the check out (Yes the sadists keep the children's section in the basement) leaving the wreckage and the pink light up Hanna Montana shoes and a pile of shoe missiles behind us.
He better not grow anymore for a while otherwise we will be practicing the art of foot binding...or my husband can take them. Either one.

Just start wearing a helmet and things will be ok.
Move down here to the South and let him go barefoot.
BTW, I also HATE shoe shopping. I have a wide foot and have always had a wide foot and shoe manufacturers hate people like me.
And I have a friend of Filipino descent who loves shoes. We blame her heritage.
Wow! What a wild child! Let your hubby take 'im next time. You're lucky you made it out of there alive or at least without a concussion!
I'm with Susan...wear a helmet!
first off how can shoes that are so relatively tiny be so damn expensive?!
we need to do some shoe shopping and im putting it off... this would be why.
You may want to go with full body armor. Looks like you and yours are going to have the same battle you and your mom did... Good luck!
Shoe shopping is the pits. My daughter used to clomp around in a pair of high heels and sulk...
At least he knows what he likes.
The only type of shopping I truly enjoy is grocery shopping. (Electronics shopping comes is fun but I always end up feeling guilty for that one.)
I think you're brave to take your kids shoe shopping. Monkey is five and he gets what he gets as far as shoes and clothes go. If he doesn't like what we buy him then he's gonna have to tough it out. I figure what was good for me is good for him-he can choose his clothes (with Mom there to veto) starting when he's around 12, but unless he's spending his OWN cash he doesn't get to really pick anything out.
Be glad he wasn't asking for the spiked pumps.
All those military officers who speak of bravery in battle have never had a barrage of shoes launched at them like that. Your valor is to be commended.
HOW you make me laugh ~ and remember!!!!
oh you reminded me of my own shoe store nightmares. and like you, they ended with us leaving the store, one crying kid under my arm, the other in the stroller. ugh!
What a trip!
I hate shoe shopping too. I thought I was the only girl who feels that way.
Too funny about the light up pink shoes for B. They might be better than cowboy boots. When he was three my son spent an entire summer in South Carolina (think 99degrees and 100% humidity) wearing cowboy boots, jeans and a flannel shirt. He refused to wear anything else so I just let him sweat.
Wait till you get a teenager running around! Yikes! They are expensive! :)
Pink Hannah Montana shoes. Yikes. Bad enough for a girl, but what do you say about the boy wanting them? You don't want him to get teased or have people think you are some sort of sadist. Good luck on that one!
We vote for the helmet too!!!
blessings,
kari & kijsa
Hannah Montana has caused many a family rift.
But seriously - that was hilarious.
Though I love shoe shopping I do NOT like shopping for shoes for the kiddos. I swear we are going to move to Arkansas and let them run around barefoot because it is not worth the insanity shoe shopping causes. They need to serve cocktails there for the moms.
I'll second Susan's suggestion to wear a helmet. :)
Wow, FUN! At least he knows what he likes and you'd be lucky to have little s in a combat situation.
You must have felt a bit of a heel. then again shows the kid has sole...you wouldn't want to pump him up tooo much tho'. it would just be putting the boot in...ad infinitum til nauseum.
Cuz xxxx
Shoe shopping is always hard. I have teenagers and it still isn't easy.
Ohhh, i luv shoes!! I will go for you!
oh no. kids grow so fast dont they! i have to get clothes for mine every few months! i hate kid shopping lol
I'm not a shoe fan either. And I hated taking my daughter when she was small. She loved the trashy, flashy shoes the best.
Shoes always look good and feel good in the store, but I get them home, and they don't!
