I think I've let myself go. The thought occurred to me today as I sat on the commode answering natures call and putting on make up by digging into the dusty remnants of a free make up sample I received at least four years ago and smearing it on my face without the benefit of a mirror.
Yeah I think I might have let myself go
This also occurred to me in the shower as I tried to lift an economy bucket sized shampoo bottle labeled "OK Shampoo" to wash the dried green beans out of my hair that have been there since Tuesday.
Its true I might be letting myself go.
This thought also drifted into my consciousness as I squeezed into a pair of maternity pants (I had my last baby in 2007) and watched my flab flop over the wait band and tried to hide it with an over sized shirt with dried noodles on the sleeve.
I am I'm letting myself go.
I read People I know that Angelia Jolie lost all her twin weight in 3 weeks by only eating papaya. I see new mom Jennifer Lopez flit around her house in a white chiffon gown with no dried snot or vomit stains on an inch of her 105 pound post baby body.
Me I'm lucky if I can find a shirt without holes from baby carriers and stroller snafu's and grab a semi frozen Weight Watchers meal for lunch while brushing the food out of my hair. White chiffon? Papaya? Not in this life time.
Maybe for a while letting ones self go is the way its supposed to be especially when you have young kids. I know in this society we are supposed to be #1 all the time. Sure me time has its place it does. But maybe when the kids are really little it isn't so bad to be able to let yourself go peacefully. To accept the mushed peas in the hair. To revel in the flab caused by the little munchkins that are now gnawing a hole in the kitchen chair with their new teeth. Maybe letting yourself go at least for a little while is what lets us concentrate on the important stuff. So let the white chiffon and papaya wait at least for a little while.
Let me say it loud and proud I Have Let Myself Go...at least for now.

Wear those mushed peas as a badge of honor, girl!
There's plenty of time in life for chiffon and papaya. (Besides, Angelina and J-Lo might be stars to some, but I bet your kids think you hung the moon!)
I love this post! I too have let myself go and am trying to come to terms w/ it...
I don't think of it as letting yourself go. YOUR LETTING YOURSELF BE! FOR NOW. It takes work and right now you have more important things.
Must post this everywhere!
Awesome!!!
Visiting from SITS : )
I agree- you are not letting yourself go- you are existing!
Jolie had to have had surgery- they live in fantasy land and we live in reality! : )
What a fantastic essay, Suzie! I have let myself go too - and I don't have any kids - now or ever. I'm also past child-bearing age - way past. Is that okay too? Ha!
We all let ourselves go....but we can get it rolling when we are ready! Nice post!
Nicely written. And true--better mushed peas than purple hair.
Awesome post. I totally let myself go after baby #2. Isnt it the proper "motherly" thing to do? ;)
Repeat after me: "They have nannies, they have nannies, they have nannies." Us commoners do not. If I had a nanny, my flabby butt would be on the stairmaster 3 hours a day. My toes would be pedicured. My hair would be coiffed.
You are fine, just the way you are. And your kids could care less how you look.
Those days when they were little went by so fast I'm really glad I spent them playing in the sand, and not at the nail salon.
I don't even like papaya.
embrace it, this is part of motherhood. i wear baby vomit like superman wears his S.
Amen sister.
I am sure Angelina and JLo have just a FEW more assistants than you do!
Wow love your blog :)

You bet! The best moms always let themselves go. It ticks me off when some celebrity mom gets "mom of the year" or some such award. Excuse me? Cook, maid, all those other servants. That's not a real mom.
I love, absolutely love coming here.I've been laughing away at this and previous posts. Can relate to every bit of it.Was working at a desk with little school kids and couldn't find the scissors or pen, patting all around me. "They're under your...um..." says a kid.Yep. The boob ledge and the thing between your boobs and stomach- that little extra roll that appears after 50, resting so comfortably on the desk like it was born to it.
"Angelia Jolie lost all her twin weight in 3 weeks by only eating papaya" Are you kidding?
You're a real woman, and thus, you are way better. Be proud!
You are too, too funny. Hang in there, Chickie-doodle, this too, shall pass. (There is a pun in there somewhere)
Hugs, Susan
I hate to agree with you...but you might have. According to Dove or Suave you can use their shampoo and get it all back! lol
I too have let myself go, but I've accepted it.
Cute kids make the dried snot, food-encrusted hair and vomit-stained clothing all worthwhile.
You get to join the ranks! Loud and proud!
And the thing is, even if you DO lose all the baby weight, you are still different. Wobblier, saggier, softer all over.
I let myself go too. Hell, some days I don't remember to brush my hair, let alone my teeth!
Thankyou. I feel much happier now. Do you think there's some sort of wristband or something that one could wear to signify being a-ok with having let oneself go? It could be like a club!
Oh we are all there! I saw a beautiful smokey eye on a beautiful mother in a mag, I tried it, only to look like I had 2 black eyes. And..the smokey eye is hard to get off! The stares when I went to pick up my children, well, lets just say they were red from rubbing the stuff off, and didnt get it all off. So looked maybe like I was crying all day after I got my 2 black eyes
OK, I agree, this IS a brilliant post. Stumbled!
I remember letting my self go with my second and I did not get it back until the third was about two. I believe that was an 8 year time frame.
Too funny!! Loved it!! =)
You're right...that was a great post!
Hi Suzie - What a great post. No truer words were spoken, and I'm guessing hundreds of moms are reading this, nodding their heads, saying "Yup! That's me, too".
Oh yes! I have let myself go! I say it loud and proud. I am not the woman I once was.
I am only now thinking that maybe there will be a little bit of me left at the end of all of this.
Wonderful post.
ummm you werent running around in a chiffon dress post partum? Really whats wrong with you. yikes how you have let yourself go.
tsk tsk dear.
crap as I type this I realize I have snot on my jeans.
I do think it's ok to let yourself go when you have babies/young ones in your house. They need much love and attention - and they do become a priority (and should). So, it's perfectly all right that you're ok with letting yourself go. You're doing it for exactly the right reasons!
Love it! Love it! I sometimes look like the underpaid nanny to a couple of beautifully groomed children! We're just paying our dues.
Some people have nothing better to do than wash the green beans from their hair...you have more important things to do!
Can you tell us more about this? I'd want to find out more details.
